CASTLEVANIA is a bloody-good 3D vampire-hunting experience that adventure fans wont want to miss. You take the role of either the whip-toting Reinhardt Schneider or Carrie Fernandez, a young girl with magical powers. Both characters have separate (though similar) storylines, complete with entirely different endings and a couple of stages that are exclusive to each character's quest. The game is set to a real-time clock function, so while slicing and dicing the bad guys players need to be aware of the time, because it wouldnt do to be caught somewhere dangerous after dark.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is for adults, the ESRB has rated thisgame Mature; it should not be bought for—or played by or around—children. That stated, the story of the game is the following: Conker's very good night turns into a very bad day. He has to deal with a crazy and abusive world, all while suffering through a massive hangover. Conker encounters abusive paint pots; jabbering dung beetles; trigger-happy, scar-faced Tediz; and a belligerent giant, with only a frying pan as a means of self-defense. He is resourceful, however, and makes the best of his situation. The game combines elements of 3-D exploration, combat, and puzzle solving. It features cinematic cutscenes, movie parodies, facial expressions, dozens of unhinged characters, and 1- to 4-player deathmatch games in a variety of styles.

Every so often a game enters the scene propelled by so much hype and promising so many innovations that decorating it with more pretty words seems pointless. Donkey Kong 64 falls into this category.

Donkey Kong 64 is a 3-D action adventure game—à la Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie—based on the game icon of the same name (you know, the ape who rolled barrels down on Mario's head in the early '80s arcades). In this massive and graphically beautiful game, Donkey Kong and his pals must right the wrongs of King K. Rool by exploring their home island in search of more than 200 gold bananas, as well as other items that help the primates' progress.

Players alternate control of Donkey Kong and four other characters—each with unique abilities—to complete puzzles, conquer "baddies," compete in mini-games, and navigate through physical challenges. In addition to the single-player adventure, unique multiplayer games offer opportunities for social interaction between marathon solo sessions.

Donkey Kong 64's incredible graphics and smooth gameplay are boosted by an included 4-MB expansion pack. The unit helps process the memory-demanding graphics, and enhances the colored lighting effects, shadows, and other eye candy, such as ... well, there we go adding to the hype machine. GoldenEye 007 has been a huge success for Rareware, and it's easy to see why. More than a simple movie translation, this has earned its top-seller status on its own. Fans of Doom and Quake will recognize the first-person shooter perspective, but there the similarity ends. James Bond 007 has too much style to simply blast everything in sight and move to the next level. No, as 007, the player has a variety of different missions to perform, each with its own specific objectives. Each mission follows the film closely, and so James must use stealth and cunning as much as brute force. But if you see a Kalashnikov rifle lying around, by all means pick it up.

Controls are easy to master, which is impressive considering the variety of actions the onscreen hero can perform. James can run and walk at variable speeds, duck, pivot, hide, attach mines to enemy helicopters, block doors from opening, and more. The optional auto-aim feature is especially nice. Of course, James Bond is proficient in a wide variety of weapons. You get to use them all, from the trusty Walther PPK (with silencer) to double sets of full-auto machine guns.

The game's faithful tribute to the Bond legacy includes briefing dossiers on each mission, complete with wisecracks from Q and flirtatious comments from Moneypenny. And the 3-D representation of locations and characters from the movie is very impressive. The Rareware team spent time on the set with digital cameras, and it shows.

One of the distinguishing features of the game is the outstanding artificial intelligence of the enemies. When attacked, squads will rush to hit the alarm. If they make it, reinforcements come running. Enemy soldiers respond to being shot or blown up with chilling realism. According to Rareware, there are over 30 different animation routines that come into play, depending on where the soldier is hit. For those who prefer the challenge of human opponents, there are six clever multiplayer modes where up to four players can shoot it out, as teams or solo agents.

Mario Kart 64, one of the first games released for the Nintendo 64 platform, is an updated translation of the very popular Super Mario Kart for the Super NES (SNES). And while the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphics power and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compelling have been left out of this release. Still, Nintendo's expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, and Mario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casual gamers) entertained. Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of a sputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150-cc engine, the game lets players race computerized opponents or up to four other players on a variety of well-designed tracks. Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collecting power-ups and nonlethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels. Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically-placed banana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shell launches their vehicle skyward, and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneck speeds, if only for a moment.

Nintendo 64 gamers have been waiting a long time for a true role-playing game to come along for their system. Now that wait is over. Like a good book, Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber will hold your attention until you either fall asleep on the couch or finish that last chapter.

Prior adventures in the Ogre series have left gamers wanting more—much more. Very few role-playing games (both then and now) have had such expansive depth. The series has allowed players to tweak every character, create specialized forces, and command them in battles through three different story lines.

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber carries forth this formula in both creating and commanding your forces, not to mention choosing from multiple endings. The object is to face ogres, defeat them, and bring peace to the Netherworld. Each mission has a winning condition, which entails capturing an enemy position. A briefing before each mission supplies you with objectives and a map.

Unfortunately, not everything is happy in Ogre land. The music and sound effects have a lot in common with older SNES titles, which is to say they're not quite up to snuff. Graphically, some of the character animations are stiff, and the tiny icons are difficult to see.

Apart from those small gripes, patience is your biggest hurdle in this game. Like most RPGs, Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is at times tedious. With more than four endings as well as three main paths to make your way through, any attempt to complete this game will greatly test your stamina. Nintendo 64 owners have been patiently waiting for a decent role-playing game, and, at long last, one has arrived in the form of the perplexing Paper Mario. World-famous video game icon Mario stars in this unconventional RPG, which was originally announced as Super Mario RPG 2. Don't be fooled by the cutesy visual exterior of this game, which borrows heavily from the well-established Mario universe. Yep... it's the same lovable Mario who dons his familiar red overalls and unkempt moustache. However, the catch is that Mario now stubbornly appears as a two-dimensional character—despite the largely 3-D exterior gaming environments that surround him. When our flat-headed friend turns around, his paper-thin presence becomes immediately apparent. It's a cool gimmick, but fortunately Paper Mario is far from a cut-and-paste cartoon caper.

As with most RPG titles, players must battle with several menacing enemies as they travel from place to place on their quest. Each encounter requires gamers to strategically choose between various modes of attack. For example, Mario is particularly handy with the hammer—thus you might opt to select his hangover-inducing hammer attack. As the adventure progresses, additional characters will join your quest. Your ever-growing posse gives you more fighting power, as each team member brings new attack moves and powers worth mastering. To advance within the game, you'll need to pay close attention to your health meter, enemy hit points, and your ever-expanding attack options. The game starts with enemies that are easy to defeat, but it quickly becomes quite difficult to survive subsequent attacks without careful planning.

Unlike most RPG games, each attack sequence is enhanced by a special action function. Instead of passively sitting back and watching each attack move occur, the player can enhance your attack by pressing a button or moving the directional controller at precisely the right time. As someone who has racked up several hours (and more than a few snoozes) during repetitious RPG attack sequences, the action feature is a welcome addition to break up the monotony of multiple attacks.

Fans of the traditional Mario games will appreciate the return of familiar characters, such as Princess Peach and Luigi. Perpetual baddie Bowser even plays a key role in this addictive adventure. Best of all, there are plenty of hidden areas and extras to uncover. Paper Mario may boast elements of the classic platform gaming genre, as well as the traditional RPG—but it ultimately cuts through all expectations to deliver an experience that appeals to both casual and hard-core gamers. —Brett Atwood

A first-person shooter that mixes spy and sci-fi, Perfect Dark is both a thoroughly engrossing one-player experience and a riotously fun multiplayer romp. Easily one of the best games of its genre on any video game console, this long-awaited follow-up to GoldenEye 007 is a must-have for Nintendo 64 owners—and a damn good reason to be one if you're not.

The futuristic Perfect Dark casts players as Joanna Dark, a secret agent who becomes embroiled in a sinister conspiracy involving aliens and an evil corporation. Gameplay is broken down into missions, each with objectives that must be unerringly completed before progressing to the next mission. This is not your typical kill-anything-that-moves game: putting a bullet in the wrong person, not keeping the right one alive, or perforating a seemingly unimportant inanimate object can often result in mission failure.

While Perfect Dark's solo missions play out much like those in GoldenEye 007, the game's fantastic multiplayer options are another matter entirely. Cooperative and counteroperative simultaneous-play modes allow for another player to join in on a mission as, respectively, a teammate or the enemy. However, the real fun here is in the highly customizable Combat Simulator, a one-to-four-player simultaneous-play mode that features both free-for-alls and team-based challenges and can include up to eight Simulants, computer-controlled combatants of varying behavior.

Although Simulants make for decent adversaries or teammates, you'll want to grab a friend—and an Expansion Pak, as only 35 percent of the game is available without one—to fully enjoy Perfect Dark. —Joe Hon

If you're looking for the ultimate in road-racing realism, you've definitely clicked on the wrong title. But for pedal-to-the-metal arcade racing, Ridge Racer 64 brings home the checkered flag. Most of the racetracks are direct ports (with new scenery added) from the older Ridge Racer games for the PlayStation, but if you're new to the series, the Nintendo 64 version offers a great introduction to the classic racing franchise.

Ridge Racer 64 features 25 different racing cars—but you'll need to win a race in order to unlock many of these sporty vehicles. Each car presents its own challenges, as control varies widely for each vehicle. The luscious graphics help create the game's illusion of speed. In particular, the feeling of a fast-moving environment remains intact in the processor-crunching four-player mode.

The Ridge Racer box claims the game features nine racetracks, which is only partially true. The game actually has three tracks, with three gameplay variations for each track. According to my math, that still adds up to a total of three tracks. Seasoned Ridge Racer fans will tear through these courses in practically no time at all, while newbies might discover a less than deep racing experience.

Fans of pure arcade racing will love the gameplay simplicity and stunning graphics of this winner. All in all, Ridge Racer 64 offers a ride that's fun, but way too short. —Mark Brooks
